Pleasing God

Pleasing God

Greetings To Declare Christ Blog Reader in the Name of our Precious Savior Jesus Christ,

This past week through many instances I was reminded of the importance of studying God's Word and not being swayed by pleasing men. (Galatians 1:10).

1 Timothy 4:16 -- "Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you." (NKJV)

Timothy is to "keep a close watch" (ESV) on his own conduct and to doctrine "teaching." (ESV) Continuing in them. Right here is where we can go astray and it is possible for anyone of us. (Galatians 1:6-8) We can sin by not keeping a watch over ourselves and the teaching/doctrine of God's Word.

Then we come to the last phrase "for in doing this (that is heeding oneself and the doctrine/teaching) you will save both yourself and those who hear you. We see the word save and one may jump to eternal salvation. However this is not the idea expressed in this usage of "save."

There are 3 basic usages of salvation/save in the Bible
     1. past salvation from "guilt and penalty of sin" - occurs when we trust in Jesus Christ alone,
      2. present salvation "releases from the power of sin" known as our daily walk,
      3. future salvation from "the very presence of sin" in heaven we will be without sin
(Abbot Smith's Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament; Lewis Sperry Chaffer Systematic Theology)

If you read 1 Timothy 1:1-2 you will see that Timothy is already a believer in Jesus Christ so this word "save" is not referring to the past tense of save in regards to Timothy. (Note: if Timothy continues in doctrine/teaching he will be teaching to the unsaved as well, with regards to the phrase "those who hear you." if they are not yet believers this could be the past tense. However this does not appear to be the focus of the passage.)

In regards to the 3rd tense of save Timothy is already a believer that is he is already saved and is guaranteed a home in heaven (John 3:16, Ephesians 1:13, John 10:28-31, and 1 John 5:13). Timothy does not need to do something additional to obtain his home in heaven where there is no presense of sin he already has this destination from the moment of trusting in Jesus Christ.

Therefore we are left with the 2nd tense the present tense of salvation the daily walk. As Timothy continues on in heeding himself and the doctrine/teaching of God's Word he will save himself and those who hear him from a disrupted relationship with God in their future daily walk.

What would happen if Timothy didn't heed himself or the doctrine/teaching of God's Word. He would begin to lead many believers astray (1 John, Jude, Galatians). Unfortunately this is happening right now all over the world. Brothers and sisters we need to obey 1 Timthy 4:16. This I write with a heavy heart since many beloved people some believers some not are right now being lead astray by men and women thoroughly convinced that they are teaching the truth of God's Word but instead they are not teaching God's Word but instead they are teaching man's word since the one of the thrusts behind the teaching is men pleasing not God pleasing (Galatains 1:9-10).

We must remain true to God's Word!

In Christ,

Traveling to California

Traveling to California

Dear Ones, We request your prayers as we travel to California for the funeral of Jonathan's grandfather, James Koehn. Please pray for Delton and Joleen (Jonathan's parents) and Jonathan's siblings as they mourn the loss of their father and grandfather. James Koehn was a believer in Jesus Christ and we anticipate the day we shall see him in Heaven where there is only peace and unity. Thank you. Dios los bendiga. Jonathan and Bethany
